Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor is bringing people back to theaters, but a 4K release is on the horizon for those who wish to keep their distance.

Brandon Cronenberg’s follow-up to Antiviral has been 8 years in the making, and based on the critical consensus, Possessor has already ascended to the ranks of father David‘s most well-regarded work. The Rotten Tomatoes average is 93%, based on 94 juicy reviews.

While studios have scrambled to bring brand-new movies that were slated for theatrical release to the VOD market as a COVID compromise, Possessor is currently playing scattered cinemas throughout the United States. Sweetening the temptation is the fact that the film is being screened in its “uncut” version (to the point where the poster and trailer boasts Possessor Uncut).

Whether it’s the positive feedback or the desire to see something new and different in a theatrical setting, it’s working for the film. Deadline offered a status update on how Cronenberg’s latest is sparking success at the box office:

"“…Possessor Uncut…played on 320 screens in its debut [weekend] and earned an estimated $227,500, with Saturday netting the most coin with $110,000. The film delivered a per-screen average of $711.”"

But for those who would (understandably) prefer to keep their distance from cinemas until science gets a better grip on the pandemic, there’s a nice consolation on the horizon: the good folks at DiabolikDVD have announced that Possessor is up for preorder on their site. 4K and Blu-ray editions of the film are set to release on December 8 (just in time for holiday gift-giving!).

The home versions come with their own physical-media twist: the 4K & Blu-ray combo pack will contain the unedited version. The standalone Blu-ray release will house the R-rated cut. Not sure which version will be made available to streaming outlets.

In any case, viewers have the option to venture out to a theater or a short wait to view Possessor in the comfort of their home. Either way, I’m excited to see the latest from one of horror’s most promising talents.
