As soon as The Haunting of Bly Manor was released on Netflix, the game began: How many hidden ghosts could the viewers find?

The Haunting of Bly Manor continued the new tradition started by 2018’s The Haunting of Hill House, and there were plenty of “hidden” ghosts sprinkled throughout the series. Most of the spirits appeared in the earlier episodes, and the most prevalent were the faceless child and the plague doctor.

Before we delve into this much further, please be advised that SPOILERS will be discussed, so if you haven’t watched The Haunting of Bly Manor, you may want to come back to this story after you see the entire series.

The first ghostly figure that I personally spotted was the plague doctor. I thought I spotted him earlier in episode one, but I definitely saw him during the scene in which Dani left her room at night, and wandered into the kitchen. At first he was just a vague silhouette, and then he moved, his beak-like mask very clear.

He appeared and reappeared multiple times in episode four, and then was seen again in the finale. We learned who he was in episode eight, which was when we also were introduced to the The Lady of the Lake, Viola Lloyd.

Now let’s talk about the sweet little child with the curly hair and no facial features. Remember, the one that Flora put the doll face mask on, rendering him even more terrifying? We first spotted him in the pile of dolls in the basement in episode two. As soon as Dani started to walk back up the stairs, this kid moved, and scared the daylights out of me!

He later shows up next to Jamie in episode four, and hides behind the radio in the kitchen in episode five. We also learn his origin story in episode eight, when Viola sleeps, wakes and walks until she loses her memory (and her face). He was the child Viola came across on one of her walks, and she sort of vaguely remembers searching for her child. The poor kid ends up being carried into a watery grave in the arms of Viola (a fate that Flora narrowly escapes in the final episode).

I am pretty sure the attic ghost is Perdita Lloyd, since she died at the hands of Viola’s ghost up there. I am also pretty sure she is responsible for what I personally thought was the most spine-chilling moment in the series. As Flora sits next to her bed, humming a little tune, something behind her moves slightly and begins singing along. Well, singing about as well as a being with no mouth can, which made the whole scene doubly frightening. Watching that scene in the full trailer sold me on Bly Manor.

There were several other ghosts hanging around in the background throughout the series, but those three were the ones that showed up most often. Now that we know more about the peekaboo ghosts, it might just be time for a repeat viewing of The Haunting of Bly Manor!
