Interview: Rob Schmidt discusses Wrong Turn and more
By Katie Harden
Rob Schmidt discusses the iconic Wrong Turn franchise, Masters of Horror, future projects, and more.
Rob Schmidt. He’s an incredibly influential filmmaker, introvert, director, and a kick-butt film professor at Emory University in Atlanta. You know him from 2003’s original Wrong Turn, Masters of Horror, and The Alphabet Killer among many others. With an infectious laugh, a kind spirit and an eye for the big picture, let’s dig in!
"“Stan Winston didn’t like the way I parked. He didn’t mind how fast or slow I parked, but he told me, you know, you park really well. It was a nice parking job. But there’s another way to park where you turn as if you’re going to hit the car to your right, and you stop, and you back up as if you’re going straight to the space. Since he told me that, I don’t know–twenty years ago? That’s the way that I park. Just to get Stan’s approval, you know. That’s Stan.”"
Schmidt about the late great Winston, and his deep love for automobiles and how to park them properly.
"“I haven’t been involved in the series for sometime.” – on the new reboot and sequels."
Here’s the video below. Hear about his love of travel, art, teaching, and how Desmond Harrington lunch-bombed (similar to photobombs, but lunch!) Eliza Dushku and Rob’s meeting. (Sidenote: Rob had wanted to work with Desmond in the first place, so it all worked out!)
The most humble, funny person I’ve interviewed. What was your favorite project of Rob’s? We want to hear it in the comments section.
