Horror movies you won’t want to watch alone: 21. Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity is the first movie in a franchise that revolves around a single family and the demon that haunts them. We get to see characters as children and adults. We get to see the family members who came before. And while that alone makes the entire series worth watching, when it comes to horror done right, it is the original movie that is the very best.

With the first movie, we got something fresh and terrifying, but that is also entertaining for horror movie fans. This is supernatural horror done in a way that we rarely saw before this. Not only was most of the movie done with single-camera scenes, think-found-footage style storytelling, and a limited cast, but we quickly learn that the leading lady of this family has apparently been haunted for a long time. (This is explored in a later movie.)

And of course, this is not just a poltergeist haunting her, it is a demon. While the footage starts off with minor things happening that could potentially be explained away, by the end of the movie it is clear that this demon means business.

Perhaps the most terrifying aspect of this movie is what remains unseen. In fact, we are told what happens at the end rather than actually getting to see it. And the fact that we can also hear certain things but not see them, is what makes this movie so impressive. It is terrifying without going too far over the top into eye-rolling territory.
