Horror movies you won’t want to watch alone: 20. The Amityville Horror

There have been quite a few movies based on the Amityville Haunting, including The Conjuring itself. But with the release of The Amityville Horror remake in 2005, we got a new look at an old horror.

And sure, there are certainly other Amityville movies that might terrify you more, in this case, this movie delivered the horror I was expecting from a story that is said to be based on actual events. No matter which Amityville scares you more, this entire story is scary enough to require a watch partner.

In this retelling of the tale, we see a family moving into a home where a mass murderer killed an entire family – his family. According to the killer, he was convinced to kill his family by voices in the house. Now a new family has moved in, and with it comes a haunting that is increasingly terrifying and dangerous.

Perhaps the moment that left me jumping was seeing one of the ghosts haunting the house screaming in what one might consider to be terror before getting pulled into the floor by other spirits. It’s scenes like this that really leave an impression, and they are the reason that horror movies like this work, no matter what a critic might say.

If you are a horror movie buff, then you have probably seen every Amityville-inspired film. And for me, this is the one that left me determined to never visit Amityville, New York ever again.
