Horror movies you won’t want to watch alone: 19. The Invitation

The Invitation is a horror movie with a more psychological twist, at least for a majority of the film. In fact, I would say that what makes this movie a terrifying watch is the anticipation of what is to come. And once we learn the truth of what is happening, the terror really starts, even as it almost feels like the story is left unfinished.

A man receives an invitation from his ex-wife to come to a dinner party with her new husband. He agrees and joins the party with his new girlfriend. But this is not a typical party and these are not typical people.

This is a former couple who has suffered an unimaginable loss – the death of their child and an attempted suicide. However, there is also something happening here that is odd and unsettling. And it doesn’t take long to realize there is danger lurking at this party.

This invitation is setting the stage for murder and death and once things come to a head, the reality of what is happening becomes a matter of staying alive. Too bad this dinner party is not an isolated event. And by the end of the movie, you may never want to enjoy dinner with friends (or an ex) ever again.

The Invitation is an understated horror movie that psyches you up before getting to the nitty-gritty payoff.
