Horror movies you won’t want to watch alone: 18. The Conjuring 2

While the original Conjuring movie was certainly scary in its own right, for me, it is The Conjuring 2 that delivered the most terrifying moment or perhaps I will say character. In fact, the character that truly haunted me after watching is the one that got its own movie because of how terrifying they were.

I am talking about the nun. There is a nun that we see at different moments in this movie that was so terrifying that for multiple nights after watching it felt like she was there in the room. I have never felt terrorized by a movie quite as much as I was by The Conjuring 2. And considering this movie is a sequel and not actually the most terrifying movie on this list, that is saying something.

If the nun, who is actually a demon playing a caricature of a nun, was a larger part of this story, this movie would have ranked higher. However, The Conjuring 2 focuses more on a haunting taking place in London that leads to the Warrens coming out of sabbatical, to help a family who has seemingly been run from their home.

It takes quite a while before we learn that the nun is actually involved in this haunting in a big way because the demon that is actually using the form of the nun is blocking Lorraine from really getting a feel for what is happening, which nearly leads to the death of Ed Warren.

On the one hand, the nun appears enough to be a thing of nightmares, and on the other, it is like the demonic entity is pushed to the side in an effort to portray this haunting as something different than what it is. It means that we don’t quite get the full impact of what could have been a truly terrifying character. (I say that, even as I remind myself that the nun haunted me for days after watching this movie.)
