Horror movies you won’t want to watch alone: 24. The Village

The Village has a lot going for it as a horror movie. Not only does it come to us from horror movie genius M. Night Shyamalan, but it also has an impressive cast that includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, and Joaquin Phoenix.

The premise of the movie is simple, there is a village surrounded by woods where creatures apparently live. These creatures are feared by the villagers. But the truth is much more sinister in many ways.

What makes this movie horror is the psychological aspect of fear. A village cut off from the rest of the world, made to believe in horrific creatures ready to kill you in the woods. And having elders know the truth of what is out there, but using their own people’s fears to keep them trapped and compliant means that this is horror with a twist.

While it is easy to say that this movie doesn’t necessarily need a companion for watching, the fact that it is terrifying on a more psychological level makes it worth a watch with someone else. You could easily say that The Village is proof that people can be deceived by those in charge out of fear or a desire not to ask questions and “rock the boat.” And that is scary enough without diving deeper into what makes The Village a brilliant movie overall.
