Showtime’s Dexter revival is really happening! Showtime has released the first teaser for the 10-episode season which will feature the return of Michael C. Hall as the serial killer we all love. After years of being off the air, the Dexter revival gives Showtime an opportunity to right the wrongs made by the show’s controversial final season.

Even now, the Dexter Season 8 finale often ranks among the “worst” finales of all time. And while the teaser does remind us all that this new revival will continue within the same continuity, it also promises some significant changes and hope for what’s to come.

What we know so far about the series is that it will take place about a decade after the original show wrapped, which left us with Dexter living life as a hermit lumberjack.

The new teaser, which was shared by the official Dexter Twitter account, shows an ax stuck into a chopped down tree trunk amid a forest blanketed in freshly fallen snow. You can hear the sounds of a fire pit crackling gently in the background and an ominous score slowly swells while Hall provides a voiceover. While peering at the ax, you can hear Hall say, “There really is nothing like getting back to nature. My nature.”

Dexter revival: What will trigger Dexter’s bloodlust?

Did he maybe use that ax to do some killing recently? Only time will tell. As the image fades out, we see the snow-covered ground with “Dexter” written across the surface in its traditional bloody smear.

As fans of the original know, the ax and overall setting is a reference to the way the show ended. When we last saw the killer, he had faked his death and gone off to live out his days as a lumberjack hidden away in the woods.

We know that Dexter is set to face-off against a new villain portrayed by Clancy Brown in the revival’s continuation. Also, fans shouldn’t expect the revival to ignite multiple new seasons as it’s intended to be a limited run. Hopefully, the finale will reach the show’s early glory days and give fans a much better note to end on than that sour Season 8 ending.
