Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Fan creates unofficial prequel film
By Mads Lennon
The Sawyer Massacre is an upcoming feature-length project created by fans with the hopes of capturing the feeling of Tobe Hooper’s original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Bloody Disgusting chatted with filmmaker Steve Merlo about his idea for the project and how he went about making it happen. Merlo said that the new movie was an “unofficial prequel to the iconic horror film” and they already raised enough funds to make the film, but now they want to try to raise more so they can film it on location in Texas.
Merlo and his team are crowd-funding the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel with IndieGogo. They’re hoping to raise at least $16,000 total to get the film completed and released to anyone interested in watching it!
If you visit the IndieGogo website, you can watch the first official trailer for the project and learn more about what Merlo and his team have in mind for The Sawyer Massacre. They’ve already raised more than $8,000, but they’re working hard to reach the $16k goal so they can actually shoot the movie on location.
As is usually the case with fundraisers like this, if you donate to the project you get certain backer rewards like a guaranteed special thanks, DVD, Blu-ray and even a chance to be killed by Leatherface on-screen!
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel will be influenced by the original
“It is our intent not to copy what the original did, but use it as influence in a stylistic way. Our film will have more blood and kills but will still be very subtle in its delivery,” Merlo says.
The film will focus on Jimmy and his friends. Jimmy is trying to recover from the loss of someone close, and so his friends bring him to the Texas countryside for a retreat. Of course, while they’re there, they get directed to an “isolated farmhouse” where nothing is what it looks like and before long, they’re haunted by the infamous Leatherface.
