The highly-anticipated Jared Leto-led Marvel film Morbius has been delayed yet again. The film, which is a Sony Pictures project rather than a Disney movie, has been pushed back by a week, according to a new report from IGN.
While fans are no stranger to films being delayed as the COVID-19 pandemic has shut down theaters worldwide and forced movie studios to reconsider their film schedules and theatrical slates.
New reports say that Morbius will now release on January 28, 2022, one week later than the previous January 21. The Jared Leto project has already been shuffled around multiple times. It was originally slated to come out on July 31, 2020, before being pushed to March, October and then to January.
For those unfamiliar with the Sony-Marvel universe, they’re producing a series of Spider-Man spinoffs, including Venom and its upcoming sequel (which is now scheduled to release before Morbius.
There is some overlap between what Sony and the MCU share rights-wise. The trailer for the Living Vampire movie shows Michael Keaton reprising his role as Adrian Toomes, The Vulture, from Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Morbius’ theatrical delay means it won’t release on Netflix until later
Because Netflix and Sony Pictures have a new deal where the streaming service will get the studio’s films after the theatrical window, it’ll be interesting to see when movies move from cinemas to Netflix.
Previously, Sony had a deal with Starz. Going off of that, we can estimate that films will take approximately seven months, give or take, to arrive on the service. If Morbius is coming out in January 2022, it will probably be on Netflix by late August or early September of the same year.
