According to a new exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, Promising Young Woman star Chris Lowell has boarded the upcoming horror movie adaptation of Grady Hendrix’s cult-hit novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism.
Per the report, Lowell will play a “muscly meathead who along with his brother performs a ‘Faith and Fitness’ at the teens’ parochial school. He sees that Gretchen is possessed and in need of an exorcism.”
It sounds like Lowell’s character will actually be the movie’s “exorcist.” The 36-year-old actor recently starred in the Oscar-winning film Promising Young Woman from Emerald Fennell and has also appeared in Netflix’s acclaimed series GLOW.
What is My Best Friend’s Exorcism about?
Lauded as a mixture between Heathers and The Exorcist, Hendrix’s novel centers on two best friends and high school sophomores, Abby and Gretchen. Abby starts to suspect that Gretchen might be possessed by a demonic force and it puts their friendship to the ultimate test.
Elsie Fisher, who is also set to lead the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel produced by Fede Álvarez, will star as Abby while Amiah Miller (House by the Lake, Lights Out) will portray Gretchen. Damon Thomas, who has previously worked on shows like Penny Dreadful and Killing Eve, is set to direct the movie, which is currently in production in Atlanta.
Rachel Ogechi Kanu and Cathy Ang are also among the main cast, playing friends of Abby and Gretchen, Margaret and Glee, respectively.
Will My Best Friend’s Exorcism be available on streaming?
Since the movie is being distributed by Amazon Studios, that means that it will eventually be available to watch via Amazon Prime Video. It’s not yet clear if the movie will have a theatrical release first, in which case it will likely not arrive on Amazon for several months after. The studios might also decide to do a simultaneous release, or a limited theatrical run before releasing the movie on streaming.
