Netflix true crime podcast investigates the Son of Sam
By Carla Davis
True crime followers, rejoice! There is a new Netflix Original podcast available, and it works hand-in-hand with the four-part docuseries The Sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness.
Netflix has made quite a splash with its true crime documentary films and series over the past few years (Making a Murderer was a huge success), and they seem to know a good thing when they have it. Their newest offering is The Sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness, which brings a different spin to the story of serial killer David Berkowitz, AKA Son of Sam.
Berkowitz terrorized New Yorkers in 1976-1977 when he killed six people and wounded seven others. His victims were mostly young white women with long hair, and such was the city-wide panic that many women cut their hair.
Berkowitz began to leave letters for the NYPD, and that is where the “Son of Sam” nickname came in. He was eventually apprehended and received six life sentences, but the fascination with his story has not ceased over the years.
Sons of Sam series investigates whether or not David Berkowitz acted alone
Journalist Maura Terry spent 40 years on a quest to prove that Berkowitz did not act alone, believing that a Satanic cult was instead involved. When Terry died in 2015, Josh Zeman ended up with his case files and continued with Terry’s search for the truth.
This is where the Netflix series comes in. The Sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness is chock full of news clips and interviews (including an interview with survivor Carl Denaro), but with so much material to work with, there is no doubt the podcast will take us deeper down the rabbit hole.
Searching for the Sons of Sam is a five-part Netflix true crime podcast that takes listeners on a behind-the-scenes tour of Zeman’s experiences and investigation. It is produced by Tenderfoot TV and Josh Zeman and can be found on Apple Podcasts.
