Courteney Cox is everywhere right now with the upcoming Friends reunion special planned at HBO Max, her new comedy horror series Shining Vale at Starz and of course, her return as Gale Weathers in Scream 5!

Most recently, she stopped by to see another Scream alum on The Drew Barrymore Show to chat about Friends, and the conversation got to Scream 5. Cox had some interesting things to say about the new film. According to her, it’s not a reboot or a remake, “it’s just a brand new launch.”

What does that mean for the movie? Does that mean there might be a continuity shift? Whatever it is, Cox sounded really excited about the possibilities.

Here is her complete quote:

"Scream, this is the fifth one. It’s not Scream 5 though, this is Scream….These directors are incredible, they’re making it absolutely, it’s a new franchise. It’s hip, it’s scary, it’s just a new Scream. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a remake, it’s just a brand new launch. I think it’s going to be fantastic."

Scream 5 could be a great way to move the franchise in a new direction

As Collider pointed out, Cox’s quote is in line with what the Scream 5 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have said before. Remember, they’re the duo behind the awesome 2019 slasher Ready or Not, so I have faith that their take on the new Scream will be exciting and refreshing while still retaining the franchise’s roots.

It’s not easy to make a horror franchise, or any franchise really, that launches and remains successful for multiple films. Many have tried and failed. Scream is an iconic horror film series for a good reason, but that doesn’t mean it should stay the same time after time.

Horror has evolved and changed quite a bit since the early 1990s when the original movie was released, and while the cast has stayed the same for the most part, I’m definitely interested to see what this fresh new take has to offer.
