Regina King is continuing her hot streak and directing duties by signing on to direct and produce the feature adaptation of Bitter Root, an acclaimed Image Comics series created by David F. Walker, Sanford Greene and Chuck Brown, reports Deadline. King will produce alongside Reina King with their Royal Ties banner.

For those unfamiliar with Bitter Root, the story is set during the Harlem Renaissance in 1924. It centers on the Sangeryes family of renowned monster hunters who are horrified when a hideous evil appears in New York City. Throughout generations, they have hunted and helped cure anyone infected by supernatural entities that feed off the era’s prejudice and transform humans into monsters.

Now that most of the Sangeryes family is dead, the remaining members have to decide whether they should kill or save the creatures and attempt to stave off a devastating invasion. Based on the description, it sounds a little like HBO’s recent hit series, Lovecraft Country.

Bitter Root is an award-winning comic series

The award-winning comic series has tons of fans, and King is coming off directing One Night in Miami, which received multiple Academy Award nominations. King herself was nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.

Bitter Root also marks another race-themed horror film similar to that of Get Out and Amazon’s recent Them. Let’s just hope the new film leans more toward what made Get Out so successful since Them has mostly been criticized for its sensationalism of black trauma.

Still, King is a very talented artist and actress, it’ll be exciting to see what she brings to the project. Apart from her involvement, there isn’t any news on when production might begin or who will be cast.
