SYFY recently unveiled their official 2021 slate and among things like the highly-anticipated Chucky television series and the Slumber Party Massacre remake, they’re also producing a new original movie inspired by the long-running cheerleader franchise. Yes, we’re getting Bring It On: Halloween, a horror installment of the popular film series.

Here is the official synopsis:

"Held down by restrictive rules, an embattled cheerleading squad seeks the freedom of a creepy, closed school gym to practice for regionals, but when members of the squad start to disappear, the cheerleaders must unmask their assailant to save themselves."

It should be noted that while this is the 2021 slate, this film won’t actually be released until 2022 (I’m guessing around September or October). The network will likely start filming it this year, however, and it is planned to be released on non-theatrical platforms.

Why Bring It On: Halloween could be amazing

Well, for starters, there is still an audience for Bring It On. Networks show marathons of the movies all the time, and there’s even a musical! And while none of them come close to recapturing the brilliance of the original film, they’re still silly and fun to watch. There are definitely worse ways to spend an afternoon!

I think that a horror movie version of a typical Bring It On film opens the door for all kinds of campy goodness and the era of all those great teen slasher flicks we love so much like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Sorority Row, etc.

The Bring It On movies have always had notes of satire and parody in them and they don’t take themselves too seriously. I think that if Bring It On: Halloween continues to harness that energy and even takes it to the next level, then we could get an excellent film that will be incredibly entertaining to watch.
