What’s next for the Saw franchise after Spiral?

So you’ve just finished watching Spiral in theaters, and now you’re considering breaking out all of your Saw movies on Blu-ray for a rewatch. No? Is that just me? Okay, fair. But either way, I’m betting you clicked on this article because you’re curious about what’s next for the franchise.

Whether you liked Spiral or not, Saw has a magnetic quality about it that makes people hunger for more. What other twisted, grotesque trap could they possibly devise next? Can the series carry on with a new Jigsaw, or will the old one return? Is Jigsaw as eponymous as, say, Michael Meyers and Jason Voorhees? In this case, maybe the “facade” stays the same, but the person behind the mask changes.

Will there be more Saw movies?

I’m almost 99.9% certain there will be another Saw movie. Saw 10 is in development, and while that could change at a moment’s notice, it seems like Lionsgate is prepared to continue developing the franchise. Whether that’s through more Saw movies spawning from the original franchise or with Spiral follow-ups, I’m not sure yet.

Movie Web actually just released a new interview with repeat franchise director Darren Lynn Bousman who discussed potentially creating a Spiral sequel:

"There might be another Spiral movie in me yet. But here’s what I think is cool about the Saw franchise, and specifically after Spiral. There still could be a Saw 9. There absolutely could still be a Saw 9, and a Spiral 2, and a TV series. The way that we’re setting this up at this point is multiple stories being told simultaneously. I don’t think we’re done seeing Tobin Bell. I don’t think we’re done seeing Hoffman, or any of these other characters that people have come to love. I think as long as there is a creative and ingenious way to subvert expectations and do something different, then I would come back. If it’s just trying to make a carbon copy and do the same thing, I don’t know if I would. But, if there was a new fresh way to do something, then yes."

In April, Bloody Disgusting confirmed that Saw 10, or Saw X as it would probably be titled, was in active development. We don’t have any details beyond that yet, so it’s hard to say whether the new movie would continue from the original franchise or tie in the Spiral story (and new Jigsaw).

Beyond the Saw movies: Lionsgate TV is considering a Saw television series

And just like fans, Bousman learns most of the details regarding the franchise at the same time we do.

A Deadline article from April revealed that Lionsgate TV was possibly in early talks to create a TV series adaptation of the book of Saw, from Mark Burg and Oren Koules’ Twisted Television.

Chairman Kevin Beggs said,  “We’re always exploring what we can do in television with something like the Saw franchise, so that’s a conversation.”

He wouldn’t go into further detail, but a Saw television show could potentially be an interesting new direction to take the franchise.
