Cruel Summer came to a shocking conclusion on Tuesday night, one that left fans wondering if we’d get more of this story in the future. The good news is that Cruel Summer Season 2 is officially happening!

Beware the following article contains spoilers for the end of Cruel Summer.

The finale seemed to end with a relatively happy ending for everyone. We found out that Jeanette was telling the truth, she didn’t see Kate that night, but Mallory did. However, Mallory only saw a blond woman roaming around Martin’s house. When she realized the truth, she didn’t feel like she could reveal the secret without exposing Kate, too.

If Mallory came forward, it would mean telling people that Kate was not in the basement the whole time as she’d been telling people. Kate forgives Mallory and the two even share a kiss while dancing outside, which felt like a natural progression of their relationship.

But then in the final moments of the episode, it was revealed via a 1994 flashback that Jeanette had been present in Martin’s house during Kate’s captivity in a segment beyond the 1993 break-in. Jeanette didn’t see Kate, but she did, in fact, hear her and was happy to let her stay trapped.

Will Cruel Summer Season 2 follow the same storyline?

While we know the show is returning for another season, it remains to be seen what storyline the new season will follow. Personally, I’d rather see the show tackle a new story as I thought the Season 1 ending was perfect and I want to see a take on new characters.

During an exclusive with E! News, showrunner Tia Napolitano said they designed the first season as a “complete” mystery.

About the new season, she said:

"I don’t know what season two is at the moment, but I have challenged myself and the writers that work here and everyone to approach it in the same way. Let’s find an untieable knot, let’s find something that seems impossible and then find the most interesting way that those two things can be possible at the same time."
