Tower of Terror is one of Disney’s most popular theme park attractions with the exhilarating (and terrifying) free-falling elevator drop becoming the stuff of legends. According to a new report from Collider, Marvel actress Scarlett Johansson is attached to produce a new Tower of Terror film and also star in the film.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Disney has adapted Tower of Terror into a film. The previous venture starred a young Kirsten Dunst in a made-for-TV movie that debuted in 1997. The new version has been in the works for several years now. That said, neither Disney nor Marvel has officially commented to confirm the news yet.

The original attraction is inspired by the classic anthology series The Twilight Zone, as the full official name of the ride is actually The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and it includes a narration by Rod Serling (well, an actor voice-acting him alongside archival footage) as part of the ride’s introduction.

Tower of Terror is one of many Disney rides turned into films

As Collider notes, Disney has been in the business of transforming their park rides into movies for a while. After launching the Pirates of the Caribbean films, which turned into a billion-dollar franchise, it’s easy to see why they’re eager to turn other rides into films. Their next venture is Jungle Cruise, starring Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson.

The closest comparison to Tower of Terror is probably The Haunted Mansion, another film based on a park attraction and one that’s considered a horror film. It’ll be interesting to see how Disney opts to translate this version to the big screen, whether they’re going to keep it PG or maybe even venture into PG-13 territory.
