Evil Season 2, Episode 2 recap: David must take Leland’s confession.

Apart from his work with Kristen and Ben this week, David is still doing his priest-in-training work. Bishop Marx and Father Kay (another Good Wife alum Dylan Baker!) are concerned his work as an assessor is conflicting with his priesthood. They devise a new practicum for him, to take a confession from someone: Leland Townsend.

During the confession, Leland tells an insidious story about David’s former girlfriend, Julia. Leland claims he manipulated his way into Julia’s life and convinced her she was a burden on everyone she loved because of her terminal illness. The implication is that Leland pushed Julia to suicide, although that’s not yet confirmed.

In an interview with TVLine, Robert King said two things of interest, one that Julia’s illness came about from an “addiction that she could not conquer,” and we’ll learn more this season. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint, on the Julia question. We’re dropping seeds.”

David does his best not to react to Leland’s goading, instead offering forgiveness and then walking away. Leland is shocked his plan didn’t work. He’s really losing his touch. But when David exits the room, he notices his hand is full of blood from squeezing his rosary so hard. Sister Andrea notices and agrees to help him.
