South Carolina: Taniwha

Considering the state of South Carolina lies directly below North Carolina, it makes sense that they are also known for their beaches. And that means that it just makes sense that they too are getting a sea creature of their own.

That’s where the Taniwha comes in! A mythical creature of the Maori people, this lizard-like creature has been known to assume the form of some of the other animals of the sea, such as sharks and whales. And while there are many different legends surrounding the Taniwha, one of the primary stories that seem most fitting for this creature as a representative for South Carolina is as a guardian who would protect the people of a tribe from other monsters.

The Taniwha is said to live in deep waters, but that is not his only home, as he is also comfortable in the caves or pools that can be found near not only the ocean but also lakes and rivers. Basically, if there is water, a Taniwha could make himself at home.

While the Taniwha might be a native of New Zealand, it feels like he might be willing to travel and if he is, why wouldn’t he want to visit South Carolina? It is a beautiful state, it offers its own brand of southern hospitality, and of course, it has beaches. Seems like a win-win for the Taniwha.
