Vermont: Dokkaebi

When it comes to Vermont, we are talking about a state that is known for things like Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and Maple syrup primarily. Of course, that is not all it is known for, but at this point, it feels like those might be its two most important features.

And when it comes to the creature that feels like it is a perfect fit for Vermont, I can’t help but feel like the Dokkaebi is a great fit. Never heard of the Dokkaebi before? Well then, you’ll love this little lesson in the origins of this Korean goblin of mythology.

A form of a goblin, the Dokkaebi is a mischievous creature with extraordinary powers and gifts. They are considered to be a nature deity (which is great since there is a lot of nature to enjoy in Vermont), but they also like playing tricks on the humans they interact with.

And since these aren’t your typical Goblins, it makes sense that they would enjoy time in a state that is not your typical New England state. After all, anywhere that can give us two of our favorite sweet treats is bound to be extraordinary.

There are any number of stories and representations of the Dokkaebi in Korean folklore, and it just feels like these goblins would be found in Vermont. Whether they are there causing mischief or just trying to befriend you, they are truly unique creatures. And that is why they just have to be included in the lore of Vermont, or at least they should be spending plenty of time there.
