The genre-bending and critically-acclaimed Lovecraft Country will not be continuing at HBO. After careful consideration, the premium cable channel and creator Misha Green seem to have decided the story for the show has been told.

The news comes exclusively from Deadline, who received a statement from HBO regarding their decision to end the show after just one season. For those upset, keep in mind that the show was originally conceived as a one-season series, although it wasn’t billed as a limited series.

"“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”"

Lovecraft Country was based on a single book by Matt Ruff. Having adapted the story, it sounds like the team behind the show was content with where the story ended.

In the past, other HBO shows have started as a single season based on just one book but then expanding beyond that. Big Little Lies is a good example of that. Similarly, Mare of Easttown was only meant to be a one-season show but considered for another run.

Misha Green was working to come up with a plan for Lovecraft Country Season 2

When the season finale aired, Green said she was planning a second season that would carry on the spirit of the novel. It sounded like she and the writers were trying to think of ways to extend the story, but I guess those plans didn’t pan out.

It’s almost inconceivable that HBO would have canceled the show otherwise, given that it was bringing in stellar ratings and receiving several prestigious award nominations.

The first season followed Atticus Freeman on a road trip across Jim Crow America in the 1950s, searching for his father. On the way, Freeman and his friends were forced to contend with the real racist monstrosities of America and creatures from the pages of H.P. Lovecraft.
