Actress Poppy Liu, who you might recognize as one of the standout actresses from the hit HBO Max series Hacks, has been cast as a series regular alongside Rachel Weisz in the upcoming Amazon Prime series Dead Ringers, per Deadline.
The new show is a reimagining of David Cronenberg’s cult classic 1980s film of the same name. This version of the story will feature a gender swap and received a straight-to-series order last year. Dead Ringers comes from Weisz, Alice Birch, Annapurna Television, and Morgan Creek Entertainment.
For those who have seen the original movie, you’ll notice some similarities and intriguing changes between the film and the new version. For starters, Weisz is set to play double duty as twins Beverly and Elliot Mantle. Not only do Elliot and Beverly share everything from drugs to lovers, but they’re known for “pushing the boundaries on medical ethics.” In the film version, Jeremy Irons played the twin roles.
Who will Poppy Liu play in Dead Ringers?
According to the outlet, Liu has been cast as Greta, the twin’s meticulous house manager. She runs Elliot and Beverly’s lives completely while keeping watch over them. That said, Greta might have her own secret motives for assisting the twins. Apart from Weisz and Liu, the series also stars Michael Chernus.
Outside of Dead Ringers and Hacks, Liu recently starred on Better Call Saul and the Kal Penn-led NBC comedy show Sunnyside. We don’t yet have a release date for the show but it sounds like the show will likely debut at some point next year. The cast is currently filming.
