10. Lavinia Richter American Horror Story: 1984

In 1984, there were some clear villains, and yet by the end of the season, we learn that there is one more in the picture. In fact, we can’t have a list of great villains without including Lavinia Richter, the woman who first started the horrors at Camp Redwood (previously Golden Star Camp).

Lavinia was the mother of Bobby and Benjamin (also known as the Mr. Jingles!). When her youngest son, Bobby, drowns in the camp lake, she snaps and kills all of the people she believes to be responsible for his death, with the exception of her son, who she basically tears apart with her words.

At Camp Redwood, she is known as the Lady in White, and she is a malevolent spirit haunting the camp. But that’s not all she does. She is also one of the reasons that there are so many ghosts haunting this camp. Because she is the nexus that is keeping everyone trapped.

Lavinia is cruel to her own child and she is vicious. And while we can understand the pain of losing a child, the fact that she would then brutally murder people does not excuse that pain. The way she treats her surviving son, telling him it should have been him who died certainly doesn’t make her a good person.

She is mostly a ghost, but she is a villain. And she seems to revel in it. (Perhaps the only thing that might redeem her even a little is the fact that she did save her only grandson from death at the same camp where the rest of her family is.)
