Lives of the Mayfair Witches: AMC expanding Anne Rice universe with new series
By Mads Lennon
After announcing that they would be adapting the iconic Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice into a television series, AMC announced today that they would potentially explore the idea of expanding the Anne Rice universe to encompass The Lives of the Mayfair Witches.
Right now, AMC has just opened the writers’ room to explore the possibility of the show. Esta Spaulding (Masters of Sex, On Becoming a God in Central Florida) is on as a writer, executive producer and showrunner, Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex, The Pacific, John Adams), a writer and executive producer.
Since Interview with a Vampire is currently on track for a 2022 debut, likely, The Lives of the Mayfair Witches won’t bow until 2023 at the earliest.

In a significant acquisition last year, AMC acquired all 18 of Anne Rice’s iconic works, including Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witches. Award-winning film and television producer Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Halt and Catch Fire, Rectify) is set to oversee the production of these projects as AMC intends to shape it into a sprawling streaming and television universe.
What is Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches series about?
The Mayfair Witches series encompasses three main novels, The Witching Hour, Lasher, and Taltos, and then three crossover novels with Vampire Chronicles, Merrick, Blackwood Farm, and Blood Canticle.
These books are a family saga written in gothic storytelling tradition following a family of witches whose fortunes have been guided by a spirit named Lasher for generations.
“We have an enormous amount of ambition for these iconic works, which have captivated and entertained millions of fans around the world, so it is gratifying to be moving so quickly from the ‘Interview’ greenlight to exploring a second series with such talented and accomplished writers and creators as Esta and Michelle,” said Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios.
