Dell Toledo from American Horror Story: Freak Show

Played by: Michael Chiklis

Why the character was the worst: There was nothing likable about Dell Toledo. He makes it very clear that he’s a narcissist, only out for himself. If he can make money, he’ll do it. If he can gain extra power, he’ll do it. It doesn’t matter who he hurts along the way.

He proved that with his backstory. He convinced Ethel not to go to Paris with the troupe they were with. He sold tickets for the birth of their son Jimmy when they were short on money without even caring about how Ethel felt. And then he left them when he decided they tied him down to anything.

While there have been times that he’s shown remorse for his actions, that remorse hasn’t stuck around for long. And that remorse doesn’t make up for all the bad he’s done. Even saving his son from prison doesn’t exactly make up for everything. The problem is that he doesn’t quite acknowledge everything that he is. Of course, the term narcissist wasn’t used back then!

One of the worst things for the character is that he ended up killed before he could really start to make up for his actions. Would it have been possible to gain redemption had he been alive, or would he have continued to fall into old ways?
