Delphine LaLaurie from American Horror Story: Coven

Played by: Kathy Bates

Why the character was the worst: One thing American Horror Story does well is create complicated characters. They give us characters that at times we can feel sorry for, even if we absolutely hate them. That’s the case with Delphine LaLaurie.

There is a moment where there’s sympathy. She’s struggling with her new life, mourning the loss of her children and dealing with this curse that she’s subjected to. However, it’s important to remember why she is one of the worst characters in the series.

This isn’t just a woman from the 18th century who owned slaves. This is a woman who tortured her slaves. She was a downright monster, mutilating and killing all because she could. And when her daughters tried to fight back, she ended up locking them away and mentally tortured them.

She never changed her views. The only time she was nice to others, especially to people of color, was when she needed something. Otherwise, people were worse than the dirt on her shoe to her. There’s no room for people like her.

Karma came for her when she was sent to hell and had to watch her daughters tortured. Was it enough? It doesn’t make up for the things she did, but at least her torture goes on a lot longer.
