Dr. Arthur Arden from American Horror Story: Asylum
Played by: James Cromwell
Why the character was the worst: When you get a story set in an asylum from the past, you just know there are going to be a lot of questionable actions. And yes, the medical professionals are going to be the most questionable people of all. That was certainly the case for Dr. Arthur Arden.
He quickly proved himself to focus more on his work than on his patients. He had secrets, and he had agreements with people in power. It soon turned out that he was a former Nazi soldier. Well, that’s the story we’re told. One of the things about a show set in an asylum is that you don’t know if the people there are genuinely struggling with mental disorders or are who they say they are. Was Anne Frank really Anne Frank?
Dr. Arden was an awful man. He had no empathy for anyone. He was responsible for many sadistic acts, making it impossible to even feel sorry for him when he allowed himself to burn alive when cremating Sister Mary Eunice.
One of the downsides was all the unanswered questions when it came to Arden. He died so suddenly with storylines still to uncover. At least the American Horror Story world was protected from any more of his sadistic actions.
