Devil in Ohio: Emily Deschanel to face-off against a cult in new Netflix thriller
By Mads Lennon
Bones actress Emily Deschanel has landed her next major television role, and this time, it has to deal with cults. Netflix has ordered Devil in Ohio to series based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Daria Polatin. Polatin will also serve as the showrunner and executive producer of the upcoming limited series. She previously worked on Hunters and Jack Ryan for Amazon.
Devil in Ohio is already in production in Vancouver, Canada and stars Deschanel as Dr. Suzanne Mathis, a hospital psychiatrist that helps a young girl, Mae, escape from a mysterious cult. Of course, escaping a cult is never easy, and despite Suzanne’s best intentions, the cult will do anything to get Mae back.
Apart from Deschanel, the series also stars Same Jaeger as Peter, Gerardo Celasco as Detective Lopez, Madeleine Arthur as Mae, Xaria Dotson as Jules, Alisha Newton as Helen and Naomi Tan as Dani. Directors include John Fawcett, Brad Anderson, Leslie Hope and Steve Adelson, with producers Polatin (EP), Rachel Miller (Under the Electric Sky) with Haven Entertainment (EP), Andrew Wilder (EP) and Ian Hay (Producer).
The limited series will consist of eight 45-minute episodes.
What is Devil in Ohio about?
We mentioned the brief logline above, but you learn more about the story by picking up the novel it is based on, although it’s not clear how close to the book the Netflix show will lean. Since Polatin wrote the novel, we can assume she’ll keep the storyline mostly the same.
Devil in Ohio is a gripping suspense thriller based on a true story. IT focuses on the darkness of cults and teen social dynamics as a teenage girl named Jules comes home to find a strange girl sitting at home. Suzanne reveals to her daughter Jules that the girl, Mae, will be staying with them for a while.
But Mae starts to infiltrate Jules’ life, wearing her clothes, sleeping in her bed, and even flirting with Jules’ crush. What are her real intentions? And how far will the cult go to get Mae back?
