Creepshow has finally returned! The creepy horror anthology debuted its third season today on Shudder, and we’ve got the recap for Creepshow Season 3, Episode 1, “Mums/Queen Bee.” If you haven’t watched the episode yet, then you’ll want to exit out of this article to avoid being spoiled.

The first part of this episode is “Mums,” based on a story by Joe Hill. A young boy named Jack (Brayden Benson) is devastated when his mom is forcefully taken from him by his father, Hank (Ethan Embry). Jack’s mother is a recovering alcoholic, and despite what his father claims, she has no intention of falling back into old habits.

We soon discover the dark truth of this family: Hank just wants Jack’s mom out of the house. He ends up murdering her with assistance from an accomplice. Later, it’s revealed that he’s been having an affair with Beth (Malone Thomas). Jack witnesses them kissing outside one night, fueling his need for revenge against everyone who wronged him and his mother.

Then it’s a good thing that Jack has found some strange seeds left behind by his mom. He plants them in his mother’s garden, unaware that his father buried his mom’s body there. Once the seeds take root, Jack feeds them with blood, on accident at first…and then intentionally.

Discovering that the flowers are carnivorous and monstrous, Jack starts feeding people to them, including Beth and his dad. Once they’re taken care of, Jack takes the flowers with him to create a new life elsewhere.

Creepshow Season 3, Episode 1 recap: Queen Bee

In the second story of the premiere, a group of teenagers tries to break into the hospital to see their favorite singer give birth. The story begins with the trio, Trenice (Olivia Hawthorne), Debra (Hannah Kepple) and Carlos (Nico Gomez), hanging out at Debra’s house discussing all things Regina (Kaelynn Gobert-Harris), a Beyoncé-esque singer who is going into labor.

They feel a complicated sense of morality over this decision since it’s obvious Regina wants privacy. No news outlets have even reported on the hospital where she’s giving birth. But the group has a connection and learns exactly where she’s giving birth (the Haddonfield Myers Hospital, ha!).

Once they sneak inside the hospital, the teens quickly realize that there is something more going on than they initially realized. For starters, all of the “nurses” have creepy glowing green eyes. Then when they actually find the room where Regina is set up, the nurses soon administer an injection that triggers an epic transformation.

Regina turns from a pop princess into a freaky, insect-like alien being. I have to say, the effects and monster build in this episode are exceptional. Regina’s transformation is just the kind of monster madness we’ve come to expect from Creepshow.

Carlos and Debra succumb to the siren call of this being, but Trenice, who always wears earbuds, narrowly avoids being brainwashed. She quickly realizes the high-pitched noise emanating from Regina is brainwashing the nurses and her friends (resulting in those eerie glowing eyes). Trenice jams cotton balls in Debra’s ears, but she’s too late to save Carlos. He wanders into Regina’s room, and she kills him.

Debra and Trenice make a run for it, taking out a few nurses along the way. But once it looks like they’re safely inside the elevator and ready to escape, Trenice reveals that she took photos of Regina’s alien form and intends to show the world. Debra isn’t happy. “I thought you were her number one fan?” Debra has tickets to Regina’s next show and has no intention of bringing down her favorite starlet, even if she is a murderous monster.

Realizing she and her friend aren’t on the same page, Debra removes her cotton balls and succumbs to the creature, kidnapping Trenice in the process. At the end of the episode, she sacrifices Trenice to Regina and her terrifying larvae-like children.
