Tananarive Due’s classic Black horror novel The Between is getting a re-release
By Mads Lennon
Emma Roberts’ (American Horror Story) book club picked a Black horror classic for Halloween this year, 1428 Elm has learned. Roberts and Karah Preiss partnered with Belletrist + BookClub to share Tananarive Due’s horror novel The Between with a new generation of readers. HarperCollins re-released the book, which was initially published in 1995, on October 5.
Over 25 years after its initial debut, the novel gets a gorgeous new cover. Additionally, Tananarive recently joined Roberts and Preiss for a discussion series as part of this month’s Belletrist + BookClub celebration.
The re-release is perfectly timed for the Halloween season as The Between is a haunting novel from one of the genre’s most notable voices. It centers on a drowning survivor named Hilton, who almost died as a young kid after getting trapped in a terrifying ocean current.

Three decades later, Hilton starts to believe he has been living on borrowed time, and now his cocking is ticking. His wife, a lawyer, starts receiving racist hate mail from a man she prosecuted, and Hilton can shake the horrific nightmares that plague him night after night. Throughout the book, Hilton must grapple with his sense of reality slipping away.
Roberts and Preiss select a new book as part of the Belletrist + BookClub series each month. Some of their previous selections have included Lisa Taddeo’s Animal, Violet Kupersmith’s Build Your House Around My Body and Meredith Westgate’s The Shimmering State.
If you’d like to join the club, membership is $9/month (paid annually) or $12/month (paid monthly) and includes access to author interviews, community events, conversations that provide deep dives into the books and discussion guides.
