Midnight Mass Episode 4 recap: What’s the deal with Bev?
Bev tells the congregation that Mass is canceled because Father Paul has a stomach bug, then Bev, Sturge and Wade head on over to Father Paul’s house, as she instructs them to dump Joe’s body out in the bay.
The two men look much more shocked than Bev did, and the Mayor stutters and stammers while looking at Joe’s body. Finally, he says to Paul, “What the hell did you do??” Bev isn’t happy at that and slaps Wade in the face. She tells him it’s just Joe, it’s nobody important. “It’s Joe, who put your daughter in a wheelchair, and he was a blessing to no one.” She preaches some vicious fire and brimstone to Wade, pauses a moment to be sure he heard her, then tells him to wrap Joe up in the carpet. Note: Bev is 100% the most puzzling character in Midnight Mass. Is she a sociopath?
Erin is on the mainland seeing a doctor, who tells her there’s no evidence she was ever pregnant. Erin insists she saw her baby on the sonogram, she heard her heartbeat, but it’s obvious the doc doesn’t believe her.
Riley and Father Paul are having their AA meeting, and Riley asks about Joe, did he start drinking again? Paul says no, he went to see his sister on the mainland. Riley looks puzzled, as well he should; Joe already told him that his sister died recently.
Later at the church, Paul is pacing and whispering frantically, holding his stomach, and we see the empty cruet. Suddenly the angel comes in, and Paul says, “Thank God, where have you been? I’m out of the sacrament.” The angel (wearing Pruitt’s coat and hat) opens a vein and allows his blood to flow into the cruet as Paul kneels on the floor and prays.
We see Riley approaching Erin’s house, but he stops and walks to the rec center instead. The door’s open; he walks in and sees Paul on the floor, sees the back of the angel. Then the angel turns, Riley gasps, Father Paul just says, “Oh,” and in what is possibly the best jump scare in Midnight Mass, the angel flies so quickly to Riley that we barely have time to register what’s happening. Father Paul closes the door as we see Riley being fed upon.
Yikes. What a shocker of an ending to this episode of Midnight Mass! Three episodes left, and we have no idea how this will all end.
