Scream 5 trailer, release date, plot, cast, and more

While not technically titled Scream 5, the new Scream movie, titled “Scream,” is the latest in the upcoming franchise that appears to be somewhere between a sequel and a reboot of the iconic slasher series. Today Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures released the Scream 5 trailer ahead of the movie’s January release date.

The fifth installment brings back the franchise’s most iconic characters and stars, including Neve Campbell as Sydney Prescott, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers and of course, Ghostface. Kevin Williamson also returns as a producer, although this is the first film in the franchise that won’t be directed by Wes Craven, who passed in 2015. Instead, this film is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed Ready or Not together in 2019.

If you want to get a taste of what’s to come in the upcoming Scream film, watch the trailer for yourself below. In it, we get to see how Dewey, Sydney and Gale are looking these days as they’re called to return to Woodsboro, where the attacks have started again.

Scream 5 release date

We’ve still got a while to wait before Scream releases in theaters. The film is slated for January 14, 2022, and is currently planned to come out exclusively in cinemas.

Scream 5 plot

As fans of the series know, Scream has always been a somewhat unique entity within the slasher genre as it combines satirical elements with straightforward hack-and-slash content we’re accustomed to seeing. The timing is ripe for a Scream reboot, especially with so many other classic horror franchises still trucking along (Halloween, Chucky, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc.).

This new film is about a new Ghostface attacking people who all seem to have some connection to the original killers from the first four movies. Interestingly, Dewey says the “attacks” are happening again, rather than “killings” or “murders,” although I’m assuming he does mean murders unless Ghostface has suddenly gone soft.

Scream 5 cast

Apart from the original cast members returning, Scream 5 will also introduce several newcomers to the series like Kyle Gallner, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Melissa Berrera, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Sonia Ammar and Jasmin Savoy Brown.

Scream 5 is scheduled to release in theaters on January 14, 2022.
