Midnight Mass episode 5 recap: Gospel
By Carla Davis
In the fifth episode of Midnight Mass, Riley goes missing before showing up at Erin’s door – with an unbelievable story to tell.
Midnight Mass episode 4 gave viewers two huge shocks, the first being the death of Joe Collie. Though Joe’s fall was an accident, Father Paul fed on the poor guy afterwards. The second shocker was at the very end of the episode, when Riley walked in on Paul and “the angel”, resulting in the angel attacking and feeding on him.
Ed, Annie and Warren are chatting about Riley, apparently he hasn’t come home for the past two nights. Warren says he’s been spending a lot of time with Miss Green, and Annie’s response is “Good for him.”
Note: The relationship between the Flynn family members is definitely a strong point in Midnight Mass.
We see Erin trying to text Riley, since he didn’t show up at her house. Cut to Sarah at her desk, and Mildred walks in, looking great.
Bowl’s mom is reporting him missing after we saw something grab him at the abandoned house. In one of the few light moments in Midnight Mass, Mom keeps stressing that his name is BILL, not Bowl; that’s a nickname his stoner buddies called him, and she’s just glad they didn’t nickname him Bong.
At St. Patrick’s, Sturge is putting up a sign telling everyone there will be no morning Mass. Father Paul just needs another day of rest to recuperate from his stomach bug.
Erin is trying to find Riley, she speaks with Annie, then goes to the marina and talks to Warren. Warren lets his Dad know that Riley is missing, and Ed gets all worked up, he thinks his older son is drinking again.
Erin goes to the Sheriff’s office to report him missing. She tells Hassan, “He said he would come to my house.” Though he is a little doubtful, Hassan seems to be taking Erin seriously, and asks her what they talked about the last time she saw him. She says, “Death. We talked about what happens when we die.”
It’s Good Friday at St. Patrick’s, and the parishioners are a bit fidgety. Paul adds “sacrament” from a cruet to the Communion wine. Bev greets Sarah and Mildred in her usual passive/aggressive manner. She’s just so happy to see Sarah there! She hugs Mildred, who looks like she just bit into a lemon.
