Since movies are always coming and going on streaming services, it’s hard to know what the best movies are at any given moment. This helpful guide is relevant as of this month, so you can rest assured that the following 12 movies are available on Netflix right now.

Whether you like horror all year round or you’re just not ready to watch Elf yet, this list should keep you occupied for a while with some genuinely terrifying movies.

The 12 best horror movies on Netflix right now

12. The Strangers (2008)

It’s funny that this movie has such a low score on Rotten Tomatoes when many people consider it to be one of the scariest home invasion movies of all time. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman play Kristen and James, a married couple who want to enjoy a relaxing weekend away, but things turn horrifying quickly when three masked strangers show up to torment them. It’s easy to see why we’ve ranked it as one of the best horror movies on Netflix.

11. Shutter Island (2010)

This neo-noir psychological thriller based on the Dennis Lehane novel of the same name is worth watching for the cast alone: Mark Ruffalo and Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s also a great film with a crazy mindf*ck. If you haven’t gotten the chance to see it yet, buckle up and settle down for a fantastic, gripping ride.

The story begins with U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his partner (Ruffalo) journeying to a fortress-like insane asylum situated on a remote island. They’re there to investigate when a woman seemingly vanishes from a locked room, but it doesn’t take long for Teddy to realize that something more insidious is going on and he might have to face his own dark past to uncover the truth.
