Is there going to be another season of Netflix blockbuster Squid Game?

It’s hard to imagine there was ever any doubt given its monumental success, but yes, Squid Game Season 2 is officially happening.

Ever since its release this past September, Squid Game has taken the world by storm and become a global phenomenon. It never seemed likely that Netflix would just let it go as a one-season hit.

Earlier today, Variety reports that series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed to Associated Press during the Monday night red carpet at a screening and Q&A in Los Angeles for the series that he was working on another season.

“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently,” said Hwang.

Squid Game Season 2 release date

It’s hard to predict Netflix release dates because streaming services don’t release on a regular schedule the same way that broadcast and cable shows do. They’re content with giving shows the time needed to film, especially if big stars are attached.

I’m sure the streamer will want to give Hwang all the time he needs to create an epic new season of Squid Game. It’s possible that a new season will release as early as next fall, around the same time that the first season was released.

But it seems more likely that it won’t release until winter 2022 at the earliest, perhaps not even until 2023 especially since he’s still in the early planning stages. It’s not unheard of for Netflix’s biggest shows to have a long wait between seasons like with Stranger Things, The Witcher and Bridgerton.

Given how much fans are loving the series, I’m sure they’ll be content waiting for as long as needed to get it right.
