Disney announced a new television adaptation of the beloved fantasy series The Spiderwick Chronicles as part of this year’s Disney+ Day.

The streaming service’s celebratory day is full-swing and part of the celebration revealed the exciting news that Disney would be bringing The Spiderwick Chronicles to life for the first time since the 2008 movie, which starred Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Short, Nick Nolte and Seth Rogen.

Based on Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black’s best-selling children’s books, the fantasy series follows the Grace family. After moving into their ancestral home, the Grace children discover a world of fairies that exists parallel to their own.

There are five books in the main series and three in the spinoff series titled Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles. The first five books include The Field Guide, The Seeing Stone, Lucinda’s Secret, The Ironwood Tree and The Wrath of Mulgarath. The spinoff features the following titles: The Nixie’s Song, A Giant Problem and The Wyrm King.

Spiderwick Chronicles release date

Disney has not yet unveiled the release date for the series, but we can probably expect it to premiere sometime in late 2022 or maybe 2023. It’s hard to say when the show might start streaming without news regarding its production available.

That said, you can revisit the novels, which are available for purchase wherever you buy books. The 2008 movie is also streaming on Netflix.

Is The Spiderwick Chronicles scary?

For those unfamiliar with the series, it’s not scary for adults but the MPAA did rate the 2008 film PG for some scary creature action and violence, peril and thematic elements. Considered a fantasy, it does occasionally have darker elements that might be frightening to some children.
