Netflix has renewed their Crime Scene docuseries for three additional seasons, with Crime Scene: The Time Square Killer releasing in December. More than 45 million households watched Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel within its first four weeks of release after it debuted earlier this year in February 2021.

True crime enthusiasts have proven that they’re hungry for more docuseries, and Netflix is listening. As part of the streamer’s continued creative partnership with filmmaker Joe Berlinger, they have renewed the Crime Scene docuseries for three additional seasons. The second season, which will focus on the Times Square Killer, will premiere in December.

Berlinger has become well-known for his crime dramas and true crime content. He previously worked on Paradise Lost and Brother’s Keeper in the 1990s and then teamed up with Netflix for 2020’s Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich and 2019’2 Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes.

The Vanishing at Cecil Hotel looked into the Los Angeles hotel’s infamous tragic background and the disappearance of Elise Lam. It ignited a global conversation on the impact of “web sleuths” in investigations and became a big hit for the service.

The second season, Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer, is officially slated to release on December 29, exclusively on Netflix. These three episodes will delve into the social and systemic forces that allowed horrific crimes to go unnoticed for too long.

This installment will look into the danger of New York’s Time Square in the late 1970s and early 1980s that enabled one man, Richard Cottingham, to commit and almost get away with unthinkable acts in a nearly-lawless area full of drugs and sex work.

Berlinger and his team are also already working on the third and fourth seasons of the Crime Scene docuseries in addition to the recently-announced documentary series about the rise and fall of Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff.

Are you happy that Crime Scene has been renewed? What do you hope the third and fourth seasons are about?
