Horror shows: The Strain

  • Seasons: 4
  • Created by: Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan
  • Starring: Corey Stoll, David Bradley, Mía Maestro, Kevin Durand, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel and Sean Astin
  • Streaming: Hulu

The Strain is one of those shows that started strong but, unfortunately, fell apart by its later seasons. While presenting an interesting and unique approach to the vampire mythos, The Strain also featured some truly annoying characters, and its storyline felt rushed in its fourth and final season.

Despite del Toro’s involvement, this horror show just never took flight. Based on the novel trilogy of the same name by del Toro and Hogan, The Strain revolved around a mysterious viral outbreak that begins ravaging New York. This “strain” has all of the hallmarks of a dark and ancient vampiric evil.

Another thing The Strain has going for it is in its monster design, which isn’t surprising considering del Toro’s involvement. There are some genuinely awesome creature effects in the show. It’s just a shame that the storyline really starts to falter the longer it goes on. However, at just four relatively short seasons, it’s not too much of a time sink if you love the creators and are a fan of vampire horror content.

Verdict: SKIP
