Horror shows: The Haunting

  • Seasons: 2
  • Created by: Mike Flanagan
  • Starring: Varies by season
  • Streaming: Netflix

When The Haunting of Hill House came out, I think everyone was blown away by just how damn good that show was. Incredibly emotional, beautifully acted, and downright terrifying, Mike Flanagan struck gold with his adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s iconic novel of the same name.

Then he did it again with The Haunting of Bly Manor based on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. While Bly Manor didn’t quite reach the same heights as Hill House before it, it was still a great addition to The Haunting anthology, but Hill House remains top dog as one of the best horror shows of the past decade and just an all-around excellent television show genre aside.

The fact it was robbed of any Golden Globe or Emmy noms is just more proof that the Academy is pretty horrible about recognizing genre fare, but I digress. Hill House begins 26 years after the Crain family has left Hill House behind. After a tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to reckon with what happened to them during their time at the house. In Bly Manor, a young au pair arrives at Bly Manor to watch the children and soon begins to see apparitions.
