I Know What You Did Last Summer is a teen horror series based on the 1973 novel Lois Duncan. While it takes from the same source material as the ’90s teen slasher starring Sarah Michelle Geller, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Philippe and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the Prime Video series is much different from the movie. It’s a modernized adaptation of the source material, although there are some fun references and callbacks to the film series.
That said, I Know What You Did Last Summer lacks the charm that made the original movie so fun. While the 1997 film was far from a critical darling, it was still entertaining enough to the masses to earn two sequels and countless references/homages over the years. This slack-jawed version is too slow-paced with barely any real scares.
The plot twists are contrived and predictable, easily spotted miles away. Overall, it just doesn’t do anything new, especially not for hardcore horror fans who will see every twist and turn coming from early on.
