Back in the day when Netflix was just starting out as a streamer, Hemlock Grove was one of the platform’s earliest originals and its content, at the time, was pretty shocking. But the series really hasn’t aged well at all. It’s just not well-written and most of the storylines feel like the writers were throwing everything at the wall to see what would stick.
If you’re drawn to the show for Famke Janssen and Bill Skarsgard, they’re great in it, but they’ve also starred in much better projects, Skarsgard especially who has gone on to become something of a horror icon after his portrayal of Pennywise in the It films.
Still, the show did earn a Primetime Emmy nomination, interestingly enough, not that that means all that much these days. Season 1 begins in the town of Hemlock Grove, a town known for its weird mixture of extreme wealth and poverty, especially after the local steel mill closed and caused many to lose their jobs.
The central plot of the first season centers on the brutal murder of two teenage girls. A 17-year-old named Peter Rumancek is suspected of the crimes because of the rumors that he is a werewolf (which he is) but he sets out to solve the murders on his own and clear his name.
Verdict: SKIP
