Based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries book series by Charlaine Harris, True Blood was a campy, fun, sexy, bloody good time. This vampire series had basically everything you could ever want in a vampire show, plus more. Created by Alan Ball, the guy who gave us Six Feet Under, True Blood aired on HBO for seven seasons and was pretty much the perfect summer show. It created a vibe that hasn’t really been replicated since and fully encapsulated the southern gothic vibe.

Unfortunately, True Blood started going off the rails around season 4, and even more so in the seasons to follow, especially the mostly panned seventh and final season. However, it’s still worth watching for the characters. True Blood gave us Eric Northman, Lafayette Reynolds, and so many others. The show’s colorful cast of characters was always its best attribute, even in its low moments.

The series revolves around a telepathic waitress living in the fictional small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. The show begins two years after the invention of a synthetic blood product, “Tru Blood,” that has allowed vampires to “come out of the coffin.” It was one of the few shows where vampires weren’t operating in secrecy.
