Morbius is not coming out in January 2022
By Mads Lennon
Bad news for Morbius fans who have been eagerly waiting for the Jared Leto movie to release in theaters. It is no longer coming out in January 2022. Originally scheduled to release on January 28, Sony has decided to change the release date yet again due to the recent surge of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Morbius, which stars Academy Award winner Jared Leto, is a new comic book horror film about the “living vampire” first introduced in the Amazing Spider-Man comics. Instead of releasing in January, the movie will now come out in April 2022.
Morbius has been delayed to April 2022
The official new release date for Morbius is now April 1. The movie is still scheduled to open exclusively in theaters, with both IMAX and premium large formats available. Deadline reports that the most significant motivating factor behind this decision comes from the recent success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which quickly became the highest-grossing film of 2021 and has grossed more than $1.37 billion worldwide.
Given that Morbius is sort of set in the same universe, it makes sense that Sony would want to follow up on that hype and is concerned that the recent surge of Omicron could diminish box office returns. Also, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, another Sony movie set in the Spider-Man universe, did pretty well, too, despite the pandemic.
However, it is understandably frustrating to those who have been waiting for this film as the latest delay marks the seventh time Morbius has been moved. The movie was originally supposed to release all the way back in July 2020. Hopefully, this will really be the last time Sony moves the date, but then again, anything is possible at this point. It’ll be interesting to see if Sony eventually decides for a simultaneous streaming release of some sort.
Are you disappointed by the latest delay in the Leto film?
Morbius will release in theaters on April 1, 2022.
