If you’re just wrapping up the Dexter: New Blood finale or you watched it when Showtime released it at midnight this morning, odds are you’re wondering if that big twist ending is real and concrete or if there is potential for that character to survive.
SPOILER WARNING: Turn back now if you have not watched the Dexter: New Blood finale as there are massive spoilers below.
We previously discussed the finale’s ending and broke down exactly what happened between Dexter, Harrison, Angela and Logan. Ultimately, Angela arrests Dexter for Matt Caldwell’s murder and intends to have him stand trial as the real Bay Harbor Butcher. But in the final moments of the episode, a confrontation between Dexter and Harrison results in Harrison shooting his father dead with the rifle Dexter gifted him for Christmas.
The final straw is the realization that Dexter killed Logan to escape from his jail cell. Logan, who, most definitely does not fit the rules of Dexter’s code, although this is far from the first time Dexter has broken his code, it’s a side of him that Harrison has been resisting until he’s confronted with the ugly truth of who his father really is.
Dexter New Blood: Is Dexter Morgan really dead?
Yes. Dexter Morgan is 100% dead. Showrunner Clyde Phillips gave several post-mortem interviews confirming the fact.
Here is a direct quote from his interview with Deadline:
"I have three words for you: Dexter is dead. I wouldn’t do that to the audience. It would be dishonest. Here, there is no question that this is the finale of Dexter. Dexter is dead."
Will there be a Dexter: New Blood season 2?
Right now it sounds more like if another season happens, it’s going to be a spin-off focused on Harrison. Phillips also told Deadline that he would happily “drop everything” to return if Showtime askes him to.
"It’s up to Showtime to make the call to me if they want more. If they ask me if I’d like to make a continuation of this, I would say yes. I have a lot of things going on but I would drop everything for this and say yes in one second."
Dexter writer Scott Reynolds also teased that a big announcement was coming for Dexter fans on Monday that has many people speculating a season 2 or spin-off announcement. Of course, it could be something else entirely but it seems likely that the announcement is directly related to some kind of continuation.
