For the first time since the 2017 film Leatherface, the iconic chainsaw-wielding murderer will be back on our screens in a new movie coming soon to Netflix. Unlike Leatherface, which functioned as a prequel to the classic 1974 film from Tobe Hooper, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a sequel of sorts that will include final girl Sally Hardesty, albeit played by a new actress.

Following the trend of movies bucking years of sequels to make a new “official” sequel à la Halloween (2018), Texas Chainsaw Massacre takes place almost 50 years after the original movie with Leatherface emerging from hiding after a group of idealistic young friends disrupt his remote Texas town.

The group includes Melody (Sarah Yarkin), her teenage sister Lila (Elsie Fisher), and their friends Dante (Jacob Latimore) and Ruth (Nell Hudson). They’ll also be joined by Sally, now played by Olwen Fouéré, the sole survivor of the 1972 massacre now hellbent on seeking revenge.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre official trailer

The trailer looks especially promising, with Leatherface getting his share of the spotlight. If you’ve been eager to see what he looks like this time around, the trailer should give you the sneak peek you’ve been looking for, plus our first real look at Fouéré as Sally.

One particular gag in the trailer features Leatherface eviscerating a group of influencers holding out their cellphones and threatening the killer with being “canceled” if he tries anything. It goes about as well as you might expect.

From a filmmaking team that includes Evil Dead‘s Fede Alvarez and the co-writer of the original 1974 film Kim Henkle, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is shaping up to be quite promising. We don’t have to wait much longer for the film either, as it will officially start streaming on February 18, 2022, exclusively on Netflix.
