X was one of the most highly anticipated horror films of 2022, and enough fans flocked to see it in its opening weekend that it made over $4 million. That was a pretty strong showing, given that theaters are still reeling from the effect the pandemic had on attendance.

With X receiving its premiere on March 18, most of us probably expected it would be at least a few months before it would be released for streaming or on Blu-ray. Instead, A24 has announced that Ti West’s bloody, old-school horror film will be available on demand Thursday, April 14. If you want to own a physical copy of X, you will just have to sit it out for another month; it releases on DVD and Blu-ray on May 24.

X stars Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Scott Mescudi, Brittany Snow and Owen Campbell as cast and crew members hoping to make a successful porn film in 1979. They arrive at a guest house located on Howard and Pearl’s farmland, planning to shoot their film there without the elderly couple knowing what’s going on.

Unfortunately, Howard and Pearl do discover the pornographic goings-on, and the young folk end up paying a big and bloody price. The film pays homage to classic horror films like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, even down to its grindhouse feel and look, and it definitely did not skimp on the blood and gore.

While we are not sure if it will be included for those who will stream X, those of us fortunate enough to watch it on the big screen were treated to a special surprise if we stuck around for the end credits. After the credits, a coming attractions trailer played for a film called Pearl, which is a prequel set during World War I. The prequel, which was filmed back-to-back with X, gives us the backstory to the character of Pearl, who is played by Mia Goth, who played both Maxine and the older Pearl in X.

The film’s writer/director Ti West announced that a sequel to X is in the works as well, which would make this a trilogy of horror films, each set in a different era.

What’s that you say? All of that news isn’t enough for you? Well, here’s another tidbit for you from A24: If you tune in to their Screening Room on April 12 at 9:00 p.m., you can buy a $20 ticket to watch a never before seen cut of X’s film-within-a-film The Farmer’s Daughters.

Next. A24: Bodies Bodies Bodies coming in August. dark
