This is GWAR documentary heading to Shudder in July
By Carla Davis
GWAR fans will be thrilled to find out their new documentary will be hitting Shudder in July. This is GWAR had its premier at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and also played at Nightstream, where it won the 2021 Audience Award.
Shudder General Manager Craig Engler claims that even the band’s most devoted fans will discover something new as the doc reveals “in moving detail the literal blood, sweat and tears that have made GWAR the true legends they are today.”
GWAR referred to Shudder as the perfect outlet for the documentary, proclaiming the band and Shudder as “two terrifying tastes that taste terrifying together.”
This is GWAR tells the story of the heavy metal art collective through interviews with band members past and present, as well as through the words of artists such as Weird Al Yankovic, Alex Winter, Thomas Lennon, Bam Margera and Ethan Embry. Viewers will also be treated to never before seen footage of GWAR frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus).
What’s the background of GWAR, who we will learn more about on Shudder next month?
GWAR claims to be not of this world, but rather warriors in the Scumdogs of the Universe. As part of an elite group of fighters in the army of the Master of All Reality, GWAR was too reckless, and they were eventually banished and ordered to conquer Earth. They started by eliminating the dinosaurs, then created the human race by mating with apes.
The Master of All Reality wasn’t happy with this, and froze them in Antarctica. That’s where Sleazy P Martini found them, and he fed them a diet of pro wrestling, horror movies, crack cocaine and heavy metal, resulting in the band you see today.
This is GWAR will be available to stream exclusively on Shudder in the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand beginning Thursday, July 21. New Shudder subscribers can receive a free seven-day trial by signing up through the website.
