Believe it or not, Hocus Pocus was released in 1993, 29 years before the upcoming Hocus Pocus 2. That’s right, the tale of the Sanderson sisters, Winnie, Sarah and Mary, is almost 30 years old; it boggles the mind, right? It is considered a family-friendly film, but there is enough adult innuendo to make it fun for the grown-ups, which is probably one of the reasons it has endured as long as it has.

Though Hocus Pocus was not at all considered a success when it first debuted in July of 1993 – it is estimated that Disney lost around $16 million on the film – over time, it has achieved cult status and become required viewing at Halloween each year. It has become one of the fun, not-gory Halloween selections for fans of the horror genre.

Rumors of a sequel or remake have been floating around since 2014, and Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker have always seemed open to the idea of playing the Sanderson sisters again. Finally, in October of 2019, official word was released that a sequel was being developed, and we were later informed that the three original actresses would be reprising their roles.

Hocus Pocus 2 is set 29 years after the Black Flame Candle was lit, bringing the Sanderson sisters back to life. Three high school girls accidently bring the witches back, where their plan is to wreak further vengeance and havoc. The girls have to make things right and keep Winnie, Sarah and Mary from causing more trouble in Salem.
